What is IOT and How it Works

Over the past few years, the term 'Internet of Things (IOT)' has emerged as one of the popular 'technology buzz' terms. Today, IOT figures prominently in technology discussions due to its rapid growth. This book aims at imparting a comprehensive knowledge about IOT , its architectural aspects, protocols involved, software contribution, hardware usage and selection, cloud computing and data analytics to the readers. The book concludes with case studies including examples smart healthcare. Broadly, the book is going to introduce IOT to the reader through a practitioner's approach. There are multiple ways in which one could define IOT. But, the crux of all the definitions remains the same.

IOT is a huge network of connected devices that gather and share data. It provides platform where different devices can communicate, store, and retrieve data through common language. The data is emitted from various sensors and sent to platform. There benefits are based on how they are used in specific environment. For example, in AC manufacturing industries, both machine and belt have sensors attached; they continuously. send data related to machine health, i.e. product specific health, to manufacturer to identify issue. Every product has barcode (product code, manufacturing details, etc.). The barcode is applied before leaving the belt. On manufacturer's side, they use barcode to track the product and provide stock information. On retailer's side, there is a barcode reader, which reads the details of the manufacturer and the product. The AC has embedded sensor which emits data regarding its health, and that data is analyzed continuously. So, customer care can be contacted for maintenance, if detected any failure in the machine.

Internet of Thing Definition

IOT is a network of devices connected to the Internet, wherein these devices communicate with each other(store-extract-share) to do assigned tasks or meet specific requirements.

Both ends Input and output, have devices which are connected via Internet and communicate with each other with the help of IOT, where data is transferred automatically. For example, the GPS of a car sends notification message regarding accident to the nearest police station, specifying location details. Another example is when your house has sensors which can sense no activity, indicating the house is empty. They shut down door, garage, window (i.e. they shut down the house), and notify you via application installed in your phone. Similarly, the house can be unlocked with phone.

Physical device can be connected in a smart way to the Internet.

In Internet of Things the things are devices which we use in our day-to-day life, such as devices which can be used for computing, connectivity, and layer of intelligence. For example:- A farmer manages his farm via smartphones, irrigation system through sensors, smoke detection, fire detection alarm, thermostat, etc.

IOT lets the. machine think, i.e. it makes the machine self-communicate without the human intervention and think like humans.

The things in IoT are devices, appliances, machines, etc. which are connected with each other and to the Internet. They communicate with each other so as to exchange data. These things can be uniquely identified with the help of IP addresses.

The IOT device dynamically adapts with changing environment and takes actions based on their operating conditions. For instance, change in resolution of motion when motion is detected. It self-configures itself, like fetching latest software upgrades with minimal user intervention. It communicates with other devices and infrastructure. It has a unique id, such as IP address and URI. User can control it remotely via user interface. It integrates, communicates & exchanges data with other devices.
